Captain Rifle, gray and old in the Alaskan Steamship service, had not lost the spirit of his youth along with his years. Ro- mance was not dead in him, and the fire which is built up of clean adventure and the association of strong men and a mighty country had not died out of his veins. He could still see the picturesque, feel the thrill of the unusual, and—at times—warm memories crowded upon him so closely that yes- terday seemed today, and Alaska was young again, thrilling the world with her wild call to those who had courage to come and fight for her treasures, and live—or die.

This was a surprisingly good read.

I wasn't expecting much when I selected this book for reading. The story starts off on a vessel headed for Alaska. The main characters are introduced early on and are developed throughout the entire story. Each character has a purpose that you may sense early on, but a reasonably smart person can expect to be surprised by some of the twists and turns presented in the pages of the book. The author successfully mixes romance, adventure, and a little bit of mystery into this scenic trip into the wilds of the Alaskan frontier.

Author writes about love and people to make you want to be in Alaska wonderful descriptions of the country and the characters
A bit wordy and political, but I think it was written in a different era. We have several friends who have lived in Alaska and they are definitely their own persons.
I really loved this book. It not only had action and a love story but the description of Alaska itself back in the time just after the Civil War was magnificent. The writer kept my attention all the way through. Very unusual characters who draw you in and keep you reading. I loved it.
I could tell by reading this book that part of its purpose was to change the perception of Alaska in the rest of the United States, and it did that for me. For the first time, I found myself wanting to visit there. The plot takes some unusual twists and stays relatively interesting, though a little unbelievable and overdone. The characters are stylized, but in romances I think this is normal. The descriptions of the tundra in summer are wonderful.
The Alaskan covers a period in US and Alaskan history during the early part of the 20th Century. The heroine is spunky but co-dependent, the hero is stoic as a matter of habit and 'policy' and the villains are vile.

I found the book amusing on several levels. The author is very in love with the Alaskan wilderness, but I'm not sure how he avoided the hordes of mosquitoes in the far north without more generously commenting on them. I lived there for almost two decades. Mosquitoes are an important character in your life story there, especially after "break up." The depiction of the the First Americans while superficially appreciative and sometimes respectful, was condescending as one might expect. The hero was annoying - a cardboard guy who along with the heroine illustrated the social and sexual attitudes and understanding of the post Victorian era. Reading this book takes you to the heart of the issue.

That said, I did manage to read the whole thing and enjoyed the period details about then current technology and tools.
Full of excitement, romance, and adventure -- did I already say romance? -- to the very end. I could hardly put it down. Oh, and I learned a lot about (and an appreciation for) Alaska during this visit to the past.
The story is romantic, but half the book is spent describing the landscape and another third fretting about the state of frontier politics, leaving only about one sixth for the actual story line.
This was a surprisingly good read.
