For Sully, the owner of an outdoor clothing company, it was supposed to be a simple backpacking trip with a potential client -- even if the client was the beautiful sports celebrity, Laura. A Darkness Within by D. Allen Crowley is a zombie story along the lines of 28 days later, in that the main characters are isolated from civilization, and when they return they discover that the world is overrun with zombie-like creatures who are full of rage -- the zombies in this story, however, are also all male and oversexed. This adds a really disturbing edge to the story, as the zombies try to rape all surviving females. A few males are immune, and the story centers around one of them, Sully, and his new girlfriend Laura. Unfortunately, I couldn't get past the gruesomeness of the idea of an oversexed zombie to appreciate the story. Not for the faint-hearted!Product details

"Darkness" is a great book to kick back with and get lost in. It's easy and fun to read and doesn't shy from great gore. Sure to please the fans of zombie, preternatural, horror, and lovely gruesome tales.
I don't usually read zombie lit, but I do enjoy the escapism of reading, so I thought I would give this book a try. I'm glad I did! "A Darkness Within" has it all action, suspense, romance, humor, and oh yes, zombies. In Sully, the author has created an engaging "everyman" hero who I found myself rooting for as he battles to save his life as well as that of his companion, Laura. A fun read for people looking for something a little different.
The author did a great job putting a unique spin on the "Zombie" horror story. I found myself drawn in by the suspense and anticipation consistently throughout the book. The ability to explain the horror and distress for each character was amazing. I would recommend for anyone who likes a good horror story with some graphic and intense situations.
It is a very easy read.
A Darkness Within pulls another variation of the flesh eating monster out of the bag, but thankfully doesn't dwell on that fact too much and concentrates on what I thought was a pretty good story overall.The characters are likeable and there is good interaction between them.
There are a few twists throughout that are well managed within the storyline as a whole and the ending is pretty good too.
If you are a fan of the whole zombie genre I don't think this book will disappoint you at all.
All in all a good read.
I began reading this book and couldn't put it down. The book is well written and the writer has the ability to draw you right into the book. He has a style all his own. He has the ability to set the stage in both science fiction and romance and blend it so well. I would highly recommend this book and further books by this author.
This is a fantastic book w/twists & turns all the way! I love the different view of the Zombie-like Creatures! very nice writing! you won't want to put this book down! there is love, loss, anger, happiness when they find it, & more.... Please do yourself a favor & get the book & read it! Very nice J. Allen Crawley!!
I finished reading "disturbed graves," (which contains a sort of prequel to this book in one of the short stories.) it was a neat book, so I was eager to read this one as well. There are so many details that I loved in "A Darkness Within." I could see a series based in this world, or a book of short stories, following more of the characters that were sometimes stayed with for a while, sometimes just seen in passing.
It's a sign of a good writer when the reader wonders about characters who only appeared for a sentence or two here and there. Where were those folks on the boat headed, and what had happened that made them so suspicious of the kindness of strangers?
Whatever happened to the motorcycle women? Did the 20 yr old ever make his way to meet his Internet love?
